Frontier Experience 3

Solway Coast AONB; Bowness-on-Solway; Port Carlisle; Drumburgh Castle; Church and Edward I monument, Burgh-by-Sands.

West of Carlisle, Bowness-on-Solway is the beginning of the Hadrian’s Wall Path (the Path also passes through Port Carlisle where canals follow the line of the Wall) and is balanced on the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Parking is easy, walking is generally flat and there are great views across the coastal landscape to Scotland.

Drumburgh Castle is a fortified farmhouse from the Border Reiver period, still inhabited so only visible from the road. Burgh-by-Sands is also on the line of the Wall but has a later claim to fame: Edward I died here, lay in state in the village church (built with stone from the Wall), and there is a monument to him (farm track walk from parking).
