Frontier Experience 5

Brampton; Banks East Turret, Pike Hill Signal Tower and Hare Hill Wall; Leahill Turret; Piper Sike Turret; Appletree Turf Wall; Lanercost Priory.

West of Birdoswald, there are easy opportunities to get close to the Wall. Brampton is a prime springing-off point both for the Wall and for the trio of Banks (wheelchair accessible), Leahill and Piper Sike Turrets. All three turrets plus surviving Wall can be seen from the road and there is parking adjacent to Banks East Turret. All are on the Hadrian’s Wall Path and the early turf Wall at Appletree can also be clearly seen from the Path.

Lanercost Priory was dissolved by Henry VIII but the 13th-century church, built largely out of Roman stone, still stands (parking on site but some uneven ground).
